Clipboard Monitoring (Android 4.1+)

Post by hanping » 16 Feb 2014, 06:02

Hanping Chinese Dictionary Pro 3.7.0 introduced a brand new Clipboard Monitoring feature to make it super quick to look up Chinese words from whichever app you happen to be using. In many cases, not only will you be able to stay in whichever app you are using, but also you may not even need to bring down the Notification Shade, because the Ticker will show you the definition in the System Status Bar.

There are some important points worth mentioning:
  • This feature is entirely optional, can be manually triggered (from the action bar's overflow menu - top right icon), and can be automatically triggered at System Startup
  • If you opt to trigger this feature at System Startup, it will add almost nothing to your device's startup time
  • Even when Clipboard Monitoring is running in the background, it has been designed to use virtually no battery or CPU power, and only 3MB-7MB memory which is negligible on nearly all devices running Android 4.0 or higher
  • The app now requests a "run at startup" permission allowing Hanping to start Clipboard Monitoring when your device starts up, should you configure it to do so
  • It's only available to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and higher. This is because of limitations in Android's Notification system in earlier Android versions
  • Android 4.0 has some issues regarding custom notifications. Consequently, the dictionary and camera apps cannot be launched from the Notification
  • Realtime listening is not available on some Android 4.3 devices. This is because of a well-known Clipboard bug. On such devices, use the clipboard icon in the Hanping's Clipboard Monitoring Notification to manually trigger Clipboard reading. Alternatively, don't copy the text to Clipboard at all. Instead, simply select the text and Share to Hanping Notification as shown here
  • The notification is persistently shown in Android's Notification Shade. This is the standard way for continuously running features on Android. On the plus side, this persistent notification can be used as a quick launcher for the Hanping Dictionary and Hanping Camera apps
  • For Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) or higher, you get an expanded notification when you copy long text showing all the words (up to the first eight). If there are more than 8 words then you will see a "(+X more)" message in the bottom right. If you want to see all the words, simply click on the notification to bring up Hanping. You can also click on the Hanzi in the left of the notification to bring up individual words
You can see this feature in action here.

Unfortunately starring a word in the clipboard monitoring doesn't use the default tag. Is this a bug?

Ah, thanks for the heads-up - it looks like a bug. I'll try to get it fixed before the next update.

Excellent news! Any ETA on the update?

Actually, a more significant problem I discovered is that when you star a word through the pop-up or through clipboard monitoring, then export the list as a text file, the word definition is missing.

Ah yes, I noticed that too a couple of weeks ago. Already fixed, so will also be in the next update, which will be ready sometime this month if all goes according to plan!
