Hanping Chinese Dictionary is available on Google Play Store and App Store, and supports in-app purchases for the excellent ABC Chinese-English and ABC English-Chinese dictionaries. These professional dictionaries provide valuable example sentences and grammatical information, along with both Simplified & Traditional characters and Pinyin/Zhuyin pronunciation.
Both dictionaries are seamlessly integrated into Hanping Chinese Dictionary. When you search for a Chinese word, Hanping automatically searches both the ABC Chinese-English and CC-CEDICT dictionaries, then merges the results while filtering out duplicates. There's no need to switch between dictionaries—Hanping handles everything for you!
When performing sentence decomposition (by pasting longer Chinese text into the search box), Hanping breaks down the text into words using all of your installed Chinese dictionaries. This comprehensive approach ensures maximum coverage, as even though ABC Chinese-English contains approximately twice as many words as CC-CEDICT, each dictionary includes unique entries.
We're continuously working to enhance these dictionaries with additional functionality to make them even more useful for your Chinese learning journey.
There are two ways to buy the ABC dictionaries.
In the app, which pays through Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iOS):
- From the main screen, tap the top-left hamburger icon (or swipe in from the left edge) to open the navigation menu
- Tap Add-ons
- You'll see the ABC Chinese-English and ABC English-Chinese add-ons, along with other add-ons like native speaker voice playback and stroke animations
On this website, paying by card instead: sign in on our Purchase Portal and buy ABC Chinese-English or ABC English-Chinese there. Either way the purchase lands on the same Hanping account, so it shows up in the app once you're signed in.
Since in-app purchases are processed through Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS), users in Mainland China may encounter access restrictions. This can typically be resolved by using a VPN. For more information, please see our Mainland China purchasing guide.
An ABC dictionary is a one-off purchase, not a subscription. Sign in to your Hanping account in the app and your Google Play or App Store purchases sync automatically, so the same account carries the dictionary across your Android and iOS devices, phones and tablets alike.
Hanping Chinese Lookup, our web app, is a separate product. The ABC dictionaries are licensed for our Android and iOS apps only, so an ABC purchase can't unlock them there.

This dictionary contains approximately twice as many Chinese headwords as the built-in CC-CEDICT dictionary. It's particularly valuable when you need to understand how to use Chinese words in context, not just their basic meanings.

This dictionary is essential if you frequently search for English words. The built-in CC-CEDICT dictionary's English index is auto-generated from definitions, which means many less common English terms are missing. ABC English-Chinese Dictionary solves this problem with its primary English index. For example, searching for 'vintage' returns no results in CC-CEDICT, but the ABC English-Chinese dictionary provides three results: 'vintage', 'vintages', and 'vintage car'.
